I have a coldfusion page where users can type free text into a textarea which is then saved to a mysql database. When users type a pound sign (pound sterling english) £ and it is saved to the database the next time it is displayed on the screen the pound sign has turned to a square. I've checked the database and it is stored correctly the problem is when coldfusion displays it.

Anyone know how to solve this problem?

when you first receive the user input, you'll be doing a certain amount of screening (e.g. to prevent sql injection) so that would be a good time to catch all occurrences of the pound sign and use REPLACE to change eachto £
