Hello,

New to the forum but I have a problem that I have been stumpted by for several days.

I have a small test server program that I know is working properly that is getting a blocked port error. I resulted to trying several ports to open and all reported the same error. I installed the software on another machine and receive no error. I have personal firewall disabled. I have no other firewall software runing.

How can I tell which program have control over what ports? How can I make sure that a port is open or not blocked? Is there another program beside microsoft's personal firewall that blocks ports indescipmentally?

I have also tried to run a Concurrent Version System on my terminal. I have the software up and running on port 2401. When I try to connect I get and error that the connection was actively denied. Again all port blocking software that I know of is offline.

I have scanned for viruses and I am clean of those.

Suggestions?

Very often firewall software, even if disabled, will continue to operate to block ports. Usually you can see the firewall engine still running by looking in Task Manager. Sysinternals freeware utility process manager will also show the firewall engine:
Solution? Use MSCONFIG to disable the program from starting at system boot. This way you can later enable the firewall when you need to.

Best solution? Configure the firewall appropriately for the ports and application software that needs to open the ports. This way the ports are open only when the application is being run.

A Sysinternals freeware alternative to MSCONFIG that I use and like is AutoRuns:

SP2 firewall ??

In any case enable the logging in your firewall to show the the failure and reveal the port. Instructions for opening a port or giving access to a program should be obtainable from the help file.

There are several Virus Scanning programs that also include a firewall component in them.
