I have setup a few Exchange Servers and when POP3 is enabled I seem to be able to telnet to the server on port 110 and enter
user username
pass password
and it logs in.

This last Exchange 2003 server is requiring that I enter
user domainname/username
pass password
instead.

This is causing headaches
Also when we try and allow SMTP traffic through and check the "my smtp server requires authentication" checkbox email never gets routed through.

Does anyone know how the default POP3 requirements may have changed and how to let authenticated users relay email?

I have checked the POP3 and SMTP protocols in the Exchange MGMT tool and compared to other Servers that work and they are exactly the same????

Thanks for your help.

What's the server running 2000 or 2003? I know that if you are on a 2000 workstation or 2000 Server you need to have the Domain prior to the User. At least it's this way with OWA.

It's a 2003 Domain and Exchange Server. OWA works fine. It's just the pop3 and SMTP that's giving me a headache.

Well, I called MS tech support. They could not figure it out either. Then all of a sudden, Voila! It works fine. Stumped me and the MS Tech. We rebooted several times and it's consitent.
