I have recently installed a desktop faxing system.

After a fair bit of persistance and config, it's ready to go.

We are recieving faxes through the system no problem - but at the minute we cannot send.

I have spoked to tech support, who say that it needs to use
POP3

I have checked this setting for the email account used and it is enabled, but I cannot telnet into the exachange server on port 110.

How can I resolve this?

Thanks

Do you have more than one server in your exchange environment? (If you do, they may have slit the Exchange services between the servers and the POP3 may service may be in another server) Are you in the same network as the Exchange Server? Do you have a firewall between your computer and the server? Is your computer Windows XP SP2 with Firewall enable? Are you filtering packets in your desktop firewall or the firewall or switches between the server and your computer?

Thanks for your reply -

In answer to your questions:

Only one Exchange server, all servers and hosts are on the same domain.

No firewalls between hosts and server, only an external firewall.

My PC is XP SP2 with Firewall enabled.

Not sure about the packet filtering.

I actually sat on the exchange server and tried to telnet into it on port 110 and it failed.

It's a bit irritating since I have got it recieving no problem!

I have checked the account that is used for this fax system - POP3 is enabled for it.

But, I still can't telnet into the server on port 110....

The Windows Firewall maybe blocking it.

Make sure that the fax program (and telnet) are in the exception list.

I am trying on the server, which is Windows 2000 Server so doesnt have the ICF.

Check your connection control on the POP3 vertual server on exchange is set to accept all but the list below and make sure the list is empty.

Also check the IP connection address is either set to the servers IP address on your network or 'All Unassigned'.

You will have to bear with me - Im not that familiar with the Exchange back end system.

How do I check the POP3 Virtual Server?

Open exchange manager, expand servers, expand your server name, protocols then POP3. Right click over the virtual server and select properties.

These settings can be checked on the general and access tabs.

Thankyou Tony - Much appreciated!!

I have done as you said, and through this I have found out that the Exchange POP3 is not running, and it set to manual.

I presume I need to start this service - will this affect the current SMTP exhange services in any way?

Need to make sure i'm not going to fix one thing and take out another!

It is set to accept "all but the list below" and the list is empty - there is currently a red cross next to the icon for the POP3 V.S - i presume this is because the services are inactive.

Correct. That means the service is inactive.

It should not interfere with SMTP, as that uses (or should use) a different port (25).

Try activating it and test your fax software.

Just remember, by activating it you open the port to the Internet. You may wish to select only your server IP on the general tab and not 'All Unassigned'. Presuming you don't want access over the internet.

Thankyou very much Tony,

Enabled the POP3 service, and as you mentioned, I only selected the server IP in the general tab.

I have now tested the software and it is working and I can now telnet in on port 110.

Again many thanks, lots of headbanging saved...at least for now anyway!
