Greetings-

Simple Exchange setup with BE/FE for Outlook Web Access. Received a request to enable POP3 on the FE server to accommodate PDAs and smartphones...

After enabling the POP3 service on the FE, I can't start the virtual server; It times out. I'm thinking there are ports that need to be opened so it can talk with AD on the internal network, but I can't find anything to tell me what ports those are.

Also the articles I find don't mention anything about configuring the SMTP server on FE; But that's required, yes?

Thanx
OregonSteve

have you enabled pop3 in services, and if so have you started the service there (not in Exchange system manager)

by default pop3 will be disabled.

Greetings-

Yes, that was my first step. I enabled POP3 in Services with Automatic startup. Then onto Exchange System Manager, but no luck. Red 'X' on POP3 virtual server and choosing start results after a time with an error that says "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details."

In the Application Log, there's an Warning entry (105) that says, "The server was unable to register the administration tool discovery information. The administration tool may not be able to see this server. The data is the error code."

MS KB Article #254525, which refers to this specific Event ID, lists the cause as being "the network cable is not plugged in, or...the network is unavailable"; However, that is not the case.

Ah, is this a small business server and if so did you run the internet and email connection utility?

Hi-

No, not Small Business Server; Windows 2003 Server SP1; It was an inplace upgrade from W2K Server. Currently server is running OWA.

Thanx
