Hi people,

I am interested in the science behind the pop-up windows. I have tried to search the net about it, but I get only reference to some pop-up blockers.

My situation is the following: I have a PC windows 2000 Pro, connected to the internet (a static IP goes to a wirelless router, and I hook up through my wireless card). Every now and then (lets say 2 or 3 times a day), when I am surfing, I just see some pop-ups. They even know my country, so they send ads on the native language.

I have checked the startup folder and the HKLM\Software...\Run key in the registry and I saw only decent programs.

So, my questions are: If there is no (visible to me) spyware program whatsoever, how I am still getting these windows? How to eliminate them, or find the code that generates them? What are the "scientific" explanations for this phenomenon?

I know that I can install some anti spyware program, however, I will like to know if these pop-ups are really inevitable (even if I have a "clean" computer), and how these things appear and how they know my IP address.

Kind regards,
N.

On a clean pc, you should not be getting random pop-ups. Depending on the website, you may get a couple of pop-ups, but nothing with porn or advertising or anything (unless you are visiting such a site of course) out of the blue. If when you turn on your PC in the morning and you get random pop-ups, you are infected with adware/spyware or possibly malware. I would suggest getting Hijackthis and posting the log here for review.

Visit my site if you like (listed at the bottom), it is guaranteed clear of any pop-ups, so if any do appear then it is due to malware on your system.

You could also try disabling JavaScript to see if that cures it, as web based pop-ups usually rely on JavaScript to open the windows.
To disable JavaScript in IE, go to internet options > security, and you'll see an option to disable active scripting.

Regards, Andy.

My pathetic attempts at learning HTML can be laughed at here:

Use Adaware and Hijack this to clean the existing machine.

Install Firefox and set it as your default browser.

From within the Options in I.E. set your security settings to high.

Firefox will eliminate most if not all of your issues.
