Hi
My set up is this
Avaya IP500v2 : Release 7 : Connected to Netgear GS724TPS (POE) switch. 48 x IP1608 phones with a PC connected to the back of each phone.
Avaya : 192.168.111.110
Router : 192.168.111.1

Customer is experiencing poor voice quality.
Have set up a Voice VLAN (VLAN2) on the Netgear switches and set all the Netgear ports to Untagged (as advised by Netgear due to the PC being connected to the rear of the phone). Have done a MUTE CLEAR on the phones and entered details as normal with 2 being chosen for the VLAN. Phone restarts and finds VLAN2 but takes ages to DHCP. Either says DISCOVER 192.168.111.1 or NO FILE SERVER FOUND.

Im not a data engineer so simple is good please.

I am obviously missing something in the set up so any help would be absolutley invaluable.

Thanks

The Avaya is used as the DHCP server for Avaya phones only. We can change this if a better option to use the main DHCP server.

Thanks

What is doing the routing between the VLANs? Have you set this up in the router/switch :)

OK, thats what I am missing. Not having set up VLANs before this is a steep learning curve. I have never had any problems before with QOS on Avaya kit. Normally just plugs in and works ok.

I will look into their router config tomorrow for the cross VLAN traffic. Does the Avaya IP500v2 have to be on the same VLAN (2) and if so where is this set in the Manager ?

The IPO is blind to VLAN's, just set the address within the VLAN2 range and set the port on the data switch to be in that VLAN or a trunk port :)

or make your life easy, and put the phones on LAN2 with the PoE switch.... ;-)

Poor quality is a very subjective term - it could be nothing to do with your network and be down to codec selection. The IPO defaults to G729 change this to G711 and see if the customer notices an improvement.

I agree that "poor voice quality" covers a lot of territory. Is it poor on both internal and external calls? Do you have any other type of station (analog, digital) - and if so, is that also poor quality? What kind of trunks? I'm still gun-shy from a bad IP phone with analog trunk experience several years ago.

The quality is similar to when you used to talk on mobile phones with the voice "blurring". Trunks are PRI, no probs with analogue to PRI. I have moved the voicemail server on to LAN2 today and it seems (please god) to have removed the problem. I have no idea why this may be unles the old PC they are using is using alot of bandwidth for something else. I didnt have chance to check it today to see what else it had running in the back ground.
