poor resolution with premier pro

I just exported for the first time with premier pro(been using 6.5)and was SHOCKED with the low quality of my export! I tried all the various formats(even uncompressed avi) but the result is always the same: poor quality- not even close to the playback of the original clips. What's up-what am I doing wrong? Related question:does Premier compress when capturing and would this effect the final product?
