It is a manufacturer design. Keeping the phones with a set polarity means the wiring in each system is the same in theory. SO you can go to any MDF, punch down your cross connect the same way each time and the phones will work the same way. You don't have to "guess" if it is white/blue or blue/white.
I think the 3904 sets are not polarity sensetive , despite they usee the same digital card , wich means the polarity is from the phone itself (3902 & 3903 )??
I have heard people say that before but everyone that I have run into is polarity sensitive. I have been doing at least 1 large installation per month for the last 15 years and I always end up rolling a jumper to get a phone to work.
I don't think this is a poor design. If the phone does not work when you run your cross connect then the color code was not followed in the cabling. How can that be a poor design? I would call it poor workmanship on the part of the cabling.
Poor design is when something does not work for a trivial reason. Touch Tone phones used to be polarity sensitive too, but a design improvement was made and now it does not matter.
There are lots of reasons to maintain good cabling, but I wouldn't give any credit to an engineer that said "Let's make the phones polarity sensitive so there are more reasons why our phones might not work"
Comparing a car battery and digital telephones is comparing apples and oranges. How can the manufacturer of the Norstar and BCM make those phones not be polarity sensitive and the same manufacturer make the Meridian 1 phones polarity sensitive?
