Plug and Play not working :-(

Recently an employee's laptop died, and i repaired it by restoring the default registry files (system, security, sam, software, default) using the XP Recovery Console.

It seemed to work a treat, his laptop booted up fine and runs fine, but i noticed that none of the hardware in the device manager automatically installed it's drivers, so i had to do it manually, and when I plug in new devices, the drivers for these do not install either, again leaving me to do it manually.

I think i've managed to trace the problem, because i've seen the following entry in the Event Log:

"Event ID: 270, Source: PlugPlayManager, Description: Plug and Play user-interface dialogs have been suppressed in Factory Mode."

From this, i'm guessing that when I restored the registry files, i made the laptop think that Windows hadn't been installed from the sysprep on the HDD, so now it plug and play has been disabled.

My question is this: Is there a way to "unsuppress" these dialogs so that the Plug and Play support will work again? I know it will work if i do a system restore, but i'd like to be able to do it without that if possible, to save me having to reinstall all the software, drivers, updates all over again.

Hope someone can help

Many Thanks

Marc
