Hi,

I'm running Exchange 5.5 with a number of Outlook 2000 clients. I want to be able to configure some sort of email security internally, just at the managerial level of the company. For example, I am trying to avoid a scenario where an Executive or Manager sends an email in error to an employee or someone else that it should not have gone to 'internally'. Is there an easy way to implement this without signing up for costly Digital Ids or encryption software etc?

Thanks in advance.

It's really difficult to understand what you're asking.

I intepret your question as: "How do I stop a manager sending an email to someone they shouldn't?"

I'm struggling to know how even encryption or didgital IDs would prevent this. How do you prevent them from paying people the wrong salaries, or from using the wrong name for them when they meet them at the coffee machine?

Hmm zbnet,

First let me start by saying thanks for taking the time to respond. However just because you claim not to 'understand' the question, doesn't mean you have to be sarcastic in your response. I would think that each of us comes to these boards looking for assistance, or to assist, not ridicule.

So to help you interpret my question better I know that encryption or digital IDs would not prevent a Manager from sending an email to the wrong person, however I was asking about a system for internal email use, that would prevent a person from being able to READ a piece of email that was delivered to them in error.

Thanks again

The question is convoluted.

"prevent a person from being able to READ a piece of email that was delivered to them in error."

If the message is already delivered, there is no way you can prevent them from reading.

So to answer your question on Exchange 5.5 there are no permission triggers to prevent certain users from reading other user's email. You can however prevent certain user from sending to certain user thru the delivery permission tabs.

I wasn't being sarcastic in my response, nor was I ridiculing you. I was seeking clarity with a graphic illustration. What you actually said was "I am trying to avoid a scenario where an Executive or Manager sends an email in error to an employee or someone else that it should not have gone to 'internally'". To avoid the scenario means to stop it happening. Clearly the system can't do that. Ed Crowley once famously said "There are seldom technological solutions to behavioural problems".

Dennissbbb is right, there is no easy way of preventing someone from reading the email that is delivered to their mailbox.

Hizbnet,

On reading my post again, I realize that you were correct. I did phrase the question incorrectly, my apologies.

I was trying to say that I wanted a way to prevent a user from being able to read an email and although I agree with the basic statement that you cannot stop a user from reading an email delivered to their mailbox, if the email is encrypted and the recipient doesn't have the relevant keys the mail would not be accessible to them, so basically this is what I'm trying to implement. A cost effective method of email encryption for internal email. I hope I've made it clearer.

Thanks again

You could try a message recall feature, if you get it working, to retreive a message sent internally.

Message recall in 5.5 is actually an Outlook (not an Exchange) feature, and it sucks big time. It actually sends another message to the client with a subject of 'XXX wants to recall message YYY'. It just acts like a big red flag for the original message, the first thing I do whenever I get one is to open the original message and see why they wanted to recall it!
