Every time I bootup Windows 98SE, I get the following message. Please wait while setup updates your config. files. This even when I haven't made any changes. Can anyone give me some advise on this problem? Thanks in advance.

Do you shut down windows properly?

Have you scanned for viruses, and spyware?

I do shut down properly when I can. What I mean is about two weeks ago I switched from dialup to SBC DSL and have had a number of freeze (black screen)problems. In these cases I have to hit the switch to turn off the computer and reboot. This causes the scandisk to run. It may be that these are the times I get the "Pls wait message". I just shut down from the start menu and restarted and did not get the message. I have scanned for viruses and spyware as well as registry clean and ther were no problems. I will pay attention to how I have to reboot and let you know if this problem is present when shut down properly. Thanks for your information.

This is a followup to this problem. I have been getting the the message even after shutting down properly. Any help to correct this will be appreciated.

under "start" -> "run" -> "msconfig"

this will bring up a config utility for windows.
under the last tab it should list the programs that are scheduled to start when you turn on you computer.

Perhapse the problem may be found here?

I don't see anything checked in the startup programs that would trigger the message. This doesn't cause any problems so I guess I will live with the message coming up when it wants to.

Thanks,

duffer2,

The message usually indicates that a registry change or scan is taking place, which is common with Antivirus scanners that run during bootup. Early versions of McAfee, for instance, caused this. Sometimes you can see a component that's making the change listed in autoexec.bat or config.sys.

Even neither file turns up anything, then the change is occuring from the registry, win.ini, or system.ini. It's best to leave those alone however. If comes down to this point, you may want to either forget about it and move on, or consider backing up data, formatting the drive, and starting over with a clean install. It's really not a bad idea anyway to do a little spring cleaning every couple years for Win 98.

If you do decide to format/reinstall Windows, reinstall each application one at a time rebooting in between. Anytime you see that message about "setup updating config files", reboot again before you install the next app. If it keeps appearing, then the last app you installed was the culprit!
