Afternoon,
I need some major help. I recently installed an optical mouse onto my PC. The next time I booted the machine up it came up with the error:

c0000218 is unwritable, missing or currupt
Memory dump

Then reboots. The problem is Ive tried using 'Boot to last good configuration no luck and when I tried to Repair its asking for an administrative password! I DONT REMEMBER IT!
Ive created another partition and cannot gain access to folders due to them being password protected! I have uninstalled the mouse but still nothing!

Please HELP I cant afford to lost the data on this HDD!

Try booting into safe mode and changing the password from there. A VP at our office did this and it worked for a lost/forgotten password.

Already tried safe mode as well, no lucky! The password problem is only a problem when Im booting from disk then selecting to Repair! It asks for a administrative password!
Thank you for the responce though!

Please don't ask or post about password workarounds, these post will get deleted anyway.

You will not lose data just like that.
Try a safe mode boot and if that does not help you can always re-install (keeps the Data), put the HD in another PC to get the data off or boot with a floppy to access the HD with a bootable Floppy. If you don't have one, check

Have you tried a SYSTEM RESTORE from Safe Mode? I've had to do this on a couple of occasions, including the "Blue Screen of Death", and it worked, everything back to normal. Follow the Restore up with a SCAN DISK.
It sounds as if the mouse drivers are not compatible with XP? If things go back to normal after Restore, you could try installing the mouse once more.
Good luck. Let me know how you get on.

Ive just got an engineer to look at it and he has said that I have a currupt registry file!

Not looking good, but THANK YOU for all your advice - which has all been passed on!

Many Thanks,

"A necessary Registry hive file couldn’t be loaded. The file may be corrupt or missing (requiring either an Emergency Repair Disk or a Windows reinstallation). The Registry files may have been corrupted because of hard disk corruption or some other hardware problem. A driver may have corrupted the Registry data while loading into memory, or the memory where the Registry is loading may have a parity error (turn off the external cache and check the physical RAM)."
