My family owns a HP Pavilian P.O.S. and recently it crashed and burned and while trying to reinstall and OS the error, "CDBOOT: CANNOT BOOT FROM CD- CODE 4" came on the screen. After being told to possibly repartition the drive leaving it without a partition, I tried booting with the cd with still no luck. I would re-install Win98 from a floppy but the drivers for the modem currently installed is impossible to find and i would like to install 2000. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What CD are you trying to boot? Since you are getting an error message it indicates that the CD is in the boot sequence. Normal HP practice is to go thru setup and make the CD the highest, boot off the recovery CD, and expect the machine to be as shipped when the restore is complete.
Have never tried to boot HP from other than recovery so I can't give any guidance there nor any advice about the 2000.

well it means that the cd you put in does not have the start up files needed to boot your computer up. all you need to do if you want to install windows 2000 is pop in the windows 2000 cd. Have the cd in the drive before you power on. thats all windows 2000 is cd bootable which means it already has all the start up files on it as well as fdisk- to partition format- to format after you partition... so when it boots it should bring you to a blue screen follow the directions from there..... remember to set the primary to active. hope this helps...

the cd is the 'windows 2000 professional final release', i was going to try to install the original OS from the factory cd, just to see maybe if it was a setting error or something. i did have the boot sequence set with the highest device being the cd-rom and other combinations and im sure you know that 2000 isn't bootable from dos so im pretty much dead with a floppy...i dunno.....
