Please help - problem repairing XP

I needed to replace the motherbaord in a clients computer, the machine is runnning XP Home. As has happened to me before when I booted the system after the hardware change XP gave me a blue screen stop error, so I used the XP Home CD (Boxed upgrade version) to repair the installation. When the 'repair installation' restarts the machine I get the blue sceen again.
I have tryed about three times with the same result, I don't want to have to reinstall everything as this would be a nightmare to me & my client - can someone please help me? I have been on the phone to Microsoft last night & this morning but they can't help :-(
