This is a repost in hopes that somebody will have an idea of what is happening here:

Hi All,

I have problem that I am hoping somebody might be able to help me out with. I upgraded to Win 2000 pro from 98 SE, all of my files and programs are intact and present but it is as if they all have been erased out of the registry. When I try to run my programs (ie. Office apps.) they say that they must be reinstalled and others will just not startup properly etc. and they don't appear in the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall them. I am a little hesitant on just deleting the folders in case they are still somehow present in the registry. Does anybody know what is going on here, or ever seen something similar to this situation, does upgrading to 2000 erase the registry entries from the previous install of 98? Please help!

Thank You very much,
gkprogrammer

The bad news is that the messages are true...you will have to reinstall the application software. It sounds as if the registry linkages did not remain in place as advertised. Micro$oft makes it all sound SO easy...

Make sure (before you do this) that you have noted exactly where the existing folders are installed and then be sure to install to the same location.

Also make sure that whatever apps you are reinstalling (especially the ones that "aren't starting") are in fact Win2000 compliant. Microsoft Office will present no problem (unless, possibly, you are using Office95? Yikes! I hope not!)

Did you convert the drive to NTFS or leave it as Fat32? If you converted to NTFS there is a good chance that this is the reason for the failure of the registry to completely re-link. BUT DON'T TRY TO CONVERT BACK to Fat32 for any reason! The benefits of NTFS far outweigh the inconvenience of reinstalling some apps. Email me! denodave@yahoo.com

Hi denodave and audiopimp,

This is what I was afraid I would have to do. Thank you very much for your replies.
