I have a Cisco Pix firewall book and I've been pouring over it to get acquainted with its various functions. But, I'm a little gunshy about starting the setup of the VPN feature.

I feel like I should start with... backing up the current, working configuration. Because, if I ever mess up the config, I can always reload that and be safe, yes?

From there, I'll just need to enable the protocols, ports, addresses in the config via the console to establish the VPN connectivity.

Then, test it via an offsite client?

Sorry this post is so high-level... I just don't feel comfortable with the process and it'd be nice to get a head-nod from someone who's beenthere, donethat.

Thanks.

Daniel.

Daniel,

I complete agree with you. By all means go ahead and back up your running config by doing a sh run and copy and pasting your information into notepad using telnet or connecting via the serial. If you are using the PDM there is an option under FILE that you can show your running config in a new window. This will give you the same effect.

Once you have that backup your are good to go and play around. If you ever did want to go back to your config that you saved you will need to add the CLEAR CONFIG ALL command on the line before, before you paste your backup config using either telnet or connecting to the pix via the serial. You will need to do this under config t.

Hope this helps..

I don't think I'll be using the PDM... I'm comfortable with command line... and like to have control over and understand every aspect of the config.

Thanks for your words, Joey.
