Pix 501 PDM basic configuration 1

I am upgrading my knowledge of the Cisco environment incrementally... I have acquired a brand new Pix 501 and connected it to a dsl line (pppoe) seemingly successfully - Verizon IP address acquired.

According to the Pix documentation, the default configuration of the Pix will apparently allow basic Internet access. I have a PC connected to the Pix. It is picking up it's IP address properly, but no access to the Internet.

Two questions: - 1. Given that Cisco has a command-line fetish, should I bother with the PDM (which I prefer)?
2. Do I have to configure a specific route for internet acces from the default configuration? If so, what sequennce of procedures is required from a pdm perspective? (Access Rule, Translation rule or Hosts/Networks)?

Any suggestions/input welcomed.

Thanks

Richard

I can tell you that the PIX does not support PPPoE by default. It needs to be specifically enabled.

I've attached a URL from Cisco below that explains how to get PPPoE up and running. As I recall you cannot configure PPPoE from PDM but it's worth checking as I never use it.

You will need to set up access lists and translation rules as you've suggested to complete the necessary configuration steps. You can configure these components via PDM.

Thanks for the response.

I did not make it clear enough that I used the PDM to set up the pppoe connection. It is a very straightforward process indeed - System Properties tab, select outside interface, Edit, select PPPOE button and enter username and password...

From your response, I gather you recommend the CLI...!

Thanks again.

Richard

Out of interest, do you have this line in your config?

ip address outside pppoe setroute

If you don't have this line, you have to explicity define your default route and nominate the next-hop device using the ip route command (or via PDM) of course.

I have the line:
ip address outside pppoe

but NOT the setroute....

full config as follows:-

Thanks

You do appear to be missing a default route there to allow you to use the internet.

Therefore you can either add the default route (in PDM) and explicity define the IP address of the next-hop router. Alternatively you can update the outside IP address by adding the setroute option on there (this will generate a default route automatically specifying the remote pppor server as the next hop device.)

Adding the setroute using the CLI worked like a charm! I will now review the PDM to see what change was created by the setroute.

Many thanks

Richard
