In QuarkXpress 6.1 on Windows XP, I had collected the frontmatter and all 34 chapters in a book file. I had spent half the day checking that the pictures were properly updated in each file. For some reason many of them were shown as "modified" but I checked that they were the correct files and updated them in the utilities box, then resaved them. I created a PS file from the frontmatter, and used Distiller to make it into a PDF file. It was fine.
Then I selected the remaining chapters in the book file and starting the process of printing them as PS files. At that point the computer froze---which wasn't unusual because it had been running all day. But after I closed all the programs and rebooted, when I opened the first chapter to print it, 90% of the pictures had lost their correct links to files and had reverted to file paths from older versions of the Quark document files---some were months old! Even the backup files---all of them---had reverted to these old file paths. Same for every chapter in the book.
Quark tech support said there was no way out of updating each picture one at a time. That will take WEEKS. HELP!
