A user here has a digital camera that he uses to take pictures and then view and file them on the network. Today, when you try to open a picture, IE comes up and it acts like its opening the picture, but then the screen stays white. When you roll over the space where the picture should be, you get the toolbar and zoom icons just like there is a picture there, but it's blank. So, I reassociated .jpg's to open in Imaging instead of IE. Then, the pictures show up in imaging but then it gives this error. "Cannot find the file \\xxxx\xxxx\xxx.jpg (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available". It's weird because it does open the picture and it's fine after you click ok on the alert, but it's annoying. I thought it might be a network connectivity thing, but I downloaded an image and saved it on the desktop and I got the same thing. Any ideas? Thanks

I used to get the same error message you refer to, when opening a .jpg in picture publisher, and like you the picture showed ok so the error message should not have been displayed. It did'nt mean anything and was just a nuisance.

Back to your probem with opening in IE, have you tried to repair IE ?

Go to start\settings\control panel

click add\remove programs

scroll down to "Microsoft internet explorer" and click add\remove

You will be given 3 options

choose "repair internet explorer" and click ok

OR

Start\run type msinfo32 ok - click tools - Internet explorer repair tool

A few things to try, These realy apply to web pages, but as you can't view pictures with IE, some might be relevant.

1. Go to - View - encoding - select "western european (windows)" repair ie if not sticking

2. Check that Show Pictures has not been disabled:

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options\Advanced - scroll down to Multimedia and
tick " Show Pictures"
untick "show image placeholders"
Click OK .

3. Restore Default Associations for Graphics File Types :

Go to Folder Options/File Types, and make sure that the following file types are associated by default with Microsoft Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe):
ART image (.art)
GIF image (.gfa, .gif)
JPEG image (.jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg)

4. Install the latest version of "Microsoft Virtual Machine"

5. It could be caused by your firewall

6. If some of the images are on adverts and you have "spyblocker" installed - this will not only block some ad's but also show a red X instead of a picture

7. Of course it could be that the pictures are no longer on the website - could you give an example of website and picture which is not working for you ?

8." cleaning " your computer may also clear this problem so....
delete your temporary files.....your temporary internet files.....and clear your ie history

9. Check out this Microsoft link :-

Web Page Displays an Image As a Red X or Not at All (Q283807) :-

10. (Thanks to Rollin' Rog) See this Norton link regarding NIS

Also try disabling the "privacy" feature, we've seen that cause problems as well...
