I have a mobo that has a broken pins in the pimary ide header, is it possible to make the Sec ide the pri, i have diabled the pri in the bios and made sec master the boot but the pc boot screen reports error loading operating system, the a drive floppy will not boot either.

lamar225,

The stress that "broke" the pin(s) could have created breaks in the traces on the PCB. Difficult to troubleshoot.

You might out of Luck on this.

The bios recognizes the HD on The sec but will not boot

lamar225,

You could try setting this in BIOS under "Boot Order".

Many BIOS's demand Pri IDE Master for BOOT.

You don't know of any friend who has a soldering iron and a soldapullt? There's a technique to do these connectors. You don't need to change all teh conenctor. All you need is to push the pin through the plastic connector, with the soldering iron on so the heat melts the plastic around the pin. Then you can solder a new pin. Maybe the street corner PC store has a technician who can do it. Ask in advance for a price, they may want to try selling you another mobo instead.

or if that is too difficult, get a hand on a CHEAP PCI IDE card (Promise FastTrak 100tx runs about $20) and set in the BIOS the option to boot from other sources...

works like a charm on one of my systems... all BOOT Drives are on that card...

Well where I Live there is no corner PC shop, The bios will not seem to take the sec IDE as a boot, and there are at least 15 bad pins so it looks as though im gonna have to replace the header
thanks guys

Ahh, not a real good idea to replace individual pins of a header on a modern multi-layer PC main board. That plastic shroud actually helps to support the pins and spread the load during insertion & removal. Remember, not all contacts of a particular socket/plug grip the same, some may bind, and an improper removal or insertion may have left some slightly bowed pins for the next time as well. Potential results? Within a few insertion/removal cycles, random and or weird bugs when a pin fractures its solider connect, and/or pulls out with the plug, or pushes in during insertion.

In addition, be careful when de-soldiering and soldiering a multi-layer pcb, it's real easy to overheat and damage many types. Depending on the circumstances, I sometimes carefully remove the shroud leaving the pins intact (takes a bit of time with a solider iron and correct tools) and then de-solider and remove each pin individually. I also use a small drill bit (1 to 2 sizes smaller than the actual hole size) and a pin vise to carefully remove any remaining solider by hand to avoid heating the hole-through additional times.

I'm an old hardware tech turned programmer many moons ago, with over twenty-eight years experience in the "digital world." Seen many a board wiped out by improper header replacement.

lamar225,
The only options that I see is to use a PCI IDE card as Ben has suggested or replace the entire mobo.

Yeah I can to trhe realization last nite that a PCI IDE card is my only real out, I found one one tigerdirect for 29.99 that will do the trick
