Phone rings once every 15-20 minutes

I have a phone that rings just ONE time every 15-20 minutes throughout the day. I have checked and the sta is not call forwarded, and they can make and recieve calls normally. My first thought was it was a bad phone, so I gave them a brand new phone.

That did not help so i thought perhaps it was a bad port, so I physically punched the ext to a new port on a different line card. That did not help so I traced the wiring from the phone to the house pair then to the phone room. Everything appears fine.

Changing the extension would be my next step, but this is a busy phone that can not afford to have a different extension assigned. Any ideas?

If it's an analog station change the "Tests?" field to "n" for no & it should stop ringing.

have you done a 'list usage extension xxxx'? this will tell you where this extension is being used at. Also you may want to check your system features and look at the ACA referal destination field. just a thought.

I have made that change. They will be letting me know if it works or not. I will be sure to post back either way. Thank you!

The problem seems to be solved, except that now the problem has moved to ext 3542 (the orginal was 3541). I have turned off testing on that ext as well...does the system move to the next ext in line for testing?

I have no idea how it could have "moved" but I had to go through all of my analog stations and remove the testing. If you have ton's of analog lines to change there may be a way you can automate the change through ASA but I don't have much experience with that. I hope the solution fixes your 2nd line as well!

There would probably be 300-400 lines to turn testing off of. I am going to wait and see if this fixes the 2nd line...if so I will turn off testing for all the ext's on this line card.

You can use the export/import facility in ASA to make the changes to all of your analog stations, instead of making the changes one at a time. I can post more detailed instructions tomorrow if you need them.

Instructions to do that would be great. In case you can not tell by now, I am new at this. My IT department just recently acquired responsibility for analog/digital phones, and I have had little experience with this besides trial and error and what I glean from the Avaya Definity "Little Instruction Book" series.

Well, guess what? I had the import/export instructions all typed up, and I ran a quick test for myself to make sure that I hadn't missed anything - the "Tests?" field for analog stations doesn't update via a station change import. Looks like you're stuck with the one-by-one changes. Luckily the field you need to change is on the first screen.

FYI - you might want to go to the Avaya Support website and download the Administrator manual for your system - the "Little Instruction Books" are great but only give you an overview.

Good luck and post back if you have any more questions.

I would very much HATE to be in your shoes.

I had a similar problem once....

Once a month, for two years, there was a line that would get calls. When you answer no one was there. The call would repeat every 15 minutes, and a day or so later the calls would stop and not start again for another 4 or 5 weeks. What was even more maddening, was the fact that it only happened during the winter. (I work in the Boston area.)

After finally acquiring ISDN services I managed to find out the source of the calls. Turns out it was a home heating oil tank. It had some sort of screwy system that called out to the oil supplier when the tank ran low on oil. It was sadly programmed to call the wrong number....

Oh well, at least I got ISDN services out of the deal. :)

Actually in ASA you can hit Ctrl+F (Find and Replace) and make the changes that way.

Object Type = Station
Select Change
Hit Next and for the Filter, Field will be Tests? and Value should be (y)es

New values, Field will be Tests? and Value will be (n)o

hit next and select Run Now and hit finish

In the future everything will work...

Good idea with the CTL+F, but I do not get a listing for the "tests?" field. I am using 1.11.05 ASA.

It is all the way at the bottom of the list..

In the future everything will work...

No, the item does not appear on the list at all. I ahve looked through every option. Perhaps I need an updated version of ASA? Can you download ASA or do you have to purchase it?

You would have to purchase ASA...

In the future everything will work...

Tests? is 25th from the bottom of the list on my ASA 2.0.8 (in the change option)
