The printer I have is okay but for the top of the paper that has a multi-coloured smear. It comes in the same place each time. It is about 5mm and happens in three places, same patern, same colours.
I have cleaned, checked for any deposits etc but to no avail
Any help appreciated.

Look for defects on imaging unit belt, fuser rollers, and transfer roller. Also try and stop the print before it goes into the fuser by opening the front door and see if you see the defects on the page then. This will help eliminate or point to the fuser as a problem.

Thanks for the tips on the phaser 740. I checked the imaging unit and eventually found some scratches that matched the exact position and shape of my problem printout. Looks like a new imaging unit. I suppose its a daft question to ask if you can get the parts or is it the full product replacement. With this one its only a couple of scratches on the aliminium foil.
Spot on with your dagnosis though.
thanks

when you say full product replacement I assume you mean the entire printer. NO you need not replace the printer. You can get a new imaging unit. It is considered a consumable and has a defined life span. You can go to xerox website and look up pricing there or contact a reseller near you and they may be able to get you better pricing. I know we usually are about 15% less than xerox list price on most items.
