hi everyone, i have a NT4 sp6a server, it is a PDC and a file server for about 30 office users. some users have persistent file locks on xls and doc files every so often. when this happens they get a msg stating ' File Locked for Editing. Open file Read-Only?'. this can happen even if they have not opened the file for a couple days.

can anyone give me clue why this is happening? one thing i have found that seems to lessen the problem (but doesn't entirely solve it) is to disable the 'recently used files' list from the excel and word menu bar. could i be on the right track with this approach?

thanks for any ideas.

There is a command line untility from MS called OH.EXE. It will tell you what has the file open. It may point you in the right direction.
