Perm issue and Apache 1

RH 8 setup w/Apache. Can't ftp files (put) into /var/ (docroot). Can however get a dir list.

Also, from the console only root can actually create files in that dir. Anyone else who tries gets "E212: can't open file for writing". This appears to be a permissions issue. Who should own /var/ /var/ and the files therein?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Right, but by default these dirs are 755. I could change them to 777 and then everyone could write to them, but is that the correct way to allow someone ftp write access to /var/

You need to create a group that you want to be able to write to the directory, add all the permitted users to that group, chgrp the directory to be owned by the group then set your permissions to 775.

Ok, he was already in the "webadmin" group, which is the group that owned /var/ Changing the perm to 775 did it.

Thanks Eric!
