I have a client who uses Crystal to access a Notes database over a relatively slow WAN link (256kbps). They are experiencing performance problems and I need help diagnosing the problem.
This is a summary of what I've found out so far.
When you design a report in Crystal it connects to the notes database without a problem but then takes around 10-15 minutes to build its list of the tables. I am thinking that Crystal has to interrogate the notes DBase to collect loads of info on tables, fields, data types etc. As there are many hundreds of tables, this seems takes an age.
After this period, you can design and run your report at an acceptable rate. This seems to show that the speed of the link is only a critical factor when Crystal is building the definition for the database.
When running reports a similar delay is experienced at the start.
I would like to hear from someone who has experience of using Crystal with Notes and particularly anyone who can shed some light on this long delay. Incidentally, when the delay occurrs, the Crystal client PC is writing to disk almost constantly.
All help gratefully appreciated. For the right person, there's a chance of some consultancy work too.
