Performance logs and alerts - service won't start

w2k server: I have the Performance Logs and Alerts Service set to start automatically. However, it doesn't start on a reboot. So I try to start it manually. It goes the the process, everything looks normal, the service starts, but then stops immediately. I've tried to "repair" the admin tools component of windows. Nothing, nada...

Any suggestions?
