It appears as if my PIII 1ghz processor is overheating. System locks periodically for fractions of seconds after using processor demanding apps. It is not internet related lag and doesn't appear to be a video problem. Can anyone recommend a heat sink\fan or any other solutions to the problem? Does intel or the PC manufacturer(Gateway in this case) supply any support for the issue?

Hmmm, doesn't sound like proc overheating to me... I'd have expected lockup to at least continue until the proc had cooled down, i.e. several minutes, or until re-boot.

(1) Have you established that the processor is indeed very hot to the touch?

(2) Is the proc fan running properly?

(3) Does your BIOS give you monitor settings for temperatures, upper limits etc?

(4) Will this momentary freeze up occur at any time, say even when you're in the BIOS?

If yes to No.4, then try removing all drives, add-on peripherals, change video card for something completely different. Also, try clearing CMOS (jumper/remove battery), and set to basic default settings.

Good luck!

The reason it appeared to me to be overheating is do to the fact that is doesn't play cathup like normal lag related issues such as hardrive access or internet lag. It simply freezes execution repeatidly for fractions of seconds muc like its got a stuttering problem. The fan appears to be running okay and is pretty much always on. I've really only noticed the problem on games but that could be just because the lockups are so brief I may not notice it on other apps. Haven't checked the bios yet. By checking with other sources it seems the high end PIII's are notorious for overheating so if anyone has has one and has resolved the problem, let me know.

Hi Billy

I noticed you dodged the issue re, is the processor very hot to touch... Go on, stick your mit on it and tell us if it really IS hot :) That's a good initial test of the proc heatsinking.

You also said "The fan appears to be running ok and is pretty much always on". That proc fan MUST be running FULL TILT, and ALL OF THE TIME. There is no room for part-time service from this item - if it ain't running ALL the time, then there's something wrong with either the fan or the circuitry.

Pentium III's shouldn't be THAT hot unless incorrectly cooled - just wait 'til you get a P4, then you'll know what hot really is :)
