Hi I am trying to decide between a Pentium 4 3.0GHz (Socket 775) or an AMD 64 3000+. I would go for the AMD however I cannot find a motherbaord for the AMD64 that includes PCI Express. Anyone know of one?
There are no current motherboards with PCI-X for AMD systems. Both nVidia and VIA have new chipsets designed to add PCI-X to Athlon 64 systems, but I do not know when boards are going to be available for purchase.
Not long now! AMD PCI Express should appear any week Q3.
Via will probably be the first with the K8T890 chipset followed by Nvidia.
Don't think that Intel has some kind of head start over AMD.
Intel have had to react first to see if they can take back some of the market share, this is because AMD 754 and the new 939 platforms are proving to be so popular and "powerful"
Intel are again being beaton and are trying to take back the initiative with 915/925PCI express.
Only trouble is it would appear that there is no performance advantage with PCI Express (at least at the moment)periferals/addon cards, just aren't running any quicker on the new bus (the current 8x AGP for instant can still easily manage the very latest GPU's with ease)
Many buyers are therefore going the socket 939 route (Athlon 64) and with a proven performance advantage over Intel (in most applications)
Obviously things will change when later generations of graphics cards etc start running out of bandwidth on 8x AGP.

Possible but then I guess AMD have no need to rush PCI Express into production when they have the performance lead at present.
Whilst I am constantly upgrading and rebuilding my own system, PCI Express represents just another platform to me, although it brings new features to the party, those features are of no benefit, infact it might be 2nd or even 3rd generation PCIE before the periferals and addon cards will be released that will enable this platform to outperform traditional motherboard layouts.
Sooooo why buy into first generation PCIE when so called older technology is at least it's performance equal and that I might be into my next motherboard swop before I can truly say the platform is quicker.

My take on this is if you want to build a computer and want PCI Express graphics that it is fine to wait for it for a while. There is not probably a great benefit from it. The Nvidia 6800 GT is a great video card so there is no disadvantage for building a computer now. However, if you like to upgrade a lot and often and reuse the video card it might be worth the wait.

First generation chipsets supporting a new standard are rarely optimal and reliable. This applies to both the motherboards and the graphics boards. Think about the first AGP boards, the first DDR boards. Remember the Intel LX chipsets? Not to say that the boards won't work fine, but chances are that you will want to get a next generation product quickly, as the bug list because of timing or functional oops will hamper performance. As the others said, the performance edge isn't there yet over AGP8X so if you need machine now, an AGP motherboards will be more stable thana PCI Express one.
Yep agreed, thanks everyone who posted. I have ordered my AMD Athlon 64 3000+ system with ASUS Radeon 9600XT Graphics and DUal Seagate 80 G SATA RAID 0 drives this morning!
At this point pci-express is basically vaporware. LSIlogic annouced a pci-x raid card 3 years ago, it only appear retail about a year ago, expect the same for pci-express. I expect 3 years before the standards settle down, and full performance Pci-express cards are available for all periferals; I may be incorrect on my assumtions. At this point, even the motherboards released by Intel have pci-express limitations and bugs
The closest to a real proformance pci-x (pci-x at 133 Mhz) AMD board is the IWill DK8N, with dual Opterons, not counting Tyan, due to poor support. If you have no need to run a card such as a raid card at full 133 speed, I would go with the Intel boards. I just completed a DK8N server, with an Lsi u320-2x raid, but the choice of AMD over Intel was due to the greater raid speed with the AMD 133 Mhz pci-x bus. At pci-x 66 Mhz, I would have used an Intel chipset board.
