Hi all

I just recently bough a p3 1ghz from ebay.
I have installed it into my pc and attempted to turn it on but nothing happens. The pc comes on, The lights come on the hard drive clicks over but nothing from the bios no system reviews from bios or anything.

Is this a bios problem? (it was a barebone system that has come with a bios CD)
if so how do i install/fix the bios?

Is it a memory problem? ive got memory that fits into the memory slots in the pc. is this sufficient for it to work?

Finally (hopefully not) is the processor broken? is there anything i can do?

Thanks in advance.

your best bet would be to try the cpu in another machine or another cpu with your motherboard.

Does your mobo need any switches or jumpers set specifically for that cpu? (or is it supposed to automatically detect & configure for it?)

thanks for the help both of you. [2thumbsup]

access64, Unfortunatley i dont have another comp to try out a p3 in :( i will have a look and see if i can get hold of one temporarily :)

Wolluf, The mobo should be set up as standard to run a p3 1ghz according to the manual and only need to play with jumper setting if i want to overclock it.

Is there any way i can test these without needing another Computer?

Thanks Again!!!

What else have you got in the case? Standard approach when no boot is to try minimal boot. No drives attached (hard, floppy or CD), just one stick of memory, keyboard & graphics card (no other cards). If this boots, connect other devices one at a time. If not, swap memory (if you have more than one stick), try without graphics card (should get series of beeps, can never remember how many if it is booting). If still no good, almost certainly mobo and/or cpu so (can you get supplier of barebones to verify it?) - in this case need access to other kit/somebody with diagnostic tools.

Wolluf,

Thanks for the help i will continue to play with this machine. you may have just saved it going out the window [smile]

Just check whether the CPU you bought is compatible with the M/B. All the recent CPUs (Tolatin) from intel are incompatible with old M/Bs supporting Coppermine CPUs.

If OK, then try clearing the BIOS or redetecting the CPU if M/B give the option.

Mentioning the make and model will certainly help in finding the problem.
