I set up a peer to peer network, a windows 98 computer to a windows xp. I am using a cable modem router. We are able to share the internet connection but for some reason I can't access files from either computer. Am I missing something? Thanks.

You will need to have both machines in the same workgroup and have a user account that exists locally on both with the same username and password. If you can add host entries to your routers DNS, you could add both your machine names, most cable routers simply pass all DNS to your ISP. If you cannot edit the DNS, either set up and internal DNS server, or use IP addresses instead of hostnames.....

Before you get too carried away, as mattwray said, make sure both machines are in the same workgroup. Next, make sure Client for MS Networks and File and Print Sharing are enabled on both machines. Also, you need to actually share something - shared documents is a good place to start.

Yes, perhaps it's stating the obvious, but its easy to actually forget to share a folder.

Obvious again, but you also have to select "microsoft networking" as the primary logon on both machines and then logon...
