PDF

This is a really dumb question. I have seen several questions regarding PDF and Publisher 2000. Does publisher have the ability to convert files to PDF?

The way I do it is to print the Publisher Document to a file using a postscript printer and then take that .ps file and distill it through acrobat.

Publisher does not have an internal function to create PDF files. When you install Acrobat, it appears as a printer to Publisher or any other program. Just select "Print" from the menu like you are going to send your document to a printer, but select "Acrobat" as the printer. Acrobat intercepts the printer data and creates a PDF file.

I have Acrobat installed, but it does not show up as something I can print to. In other words, my 2 printers and fax show up and that's it. How do I get Acrobat to show up there?

You probably just have Acrobat Reader (recently renamed Adobe Reader) installed . That's the free version. To create PDF files you'll need the full version...it lists for $149 on Adobe's website.
If you're just wanting PDF files without any of the other nice features that the software offers, you'll probably want to check out some of the free converters that are available.
I haven't tried it, but Snap To PDF looks promising. Check it out at

In order to see a PDF "printer" you'll also have to install Acrobat Distiller which is the postscript print arm of the full Acrobat suite. There are three methods you can use to print to PDF. One is to print to Acrobat Printer which is a low end method of creating PDF docs without graphics. The next method is printing directly to Acrobat Distiller. The preferred method in my office, where we create high end docs with graphics, is to print to a postscript printer thus creating a .ps file and then distill the .ps into a PDF thru the use of Acrobat Distiller. If you have the full version of Acrobat, there are extensive help screens or the instruction manuals available explaining how all of these are done. Or, look on the Adobe site or do a search on the Acrobat forum of Tek-Tips. It's a great resourch. I visit it often and learn new things all the time.
