First off, let me say that I'm not a system admin. I'm a network guy, so go easy on me. :) I've been asked to help troubleshoot a problem we have with certain PCs are hanging during shutdown. This is only happening to some of our brand new PCs and none of our systems people have figured out why.

I took a look and noticed that on the systems that shutdown correctly, there are several Kerberos authentication packets back and forth between the PC and the domain controller (I think that's the right term!) On the PCs that hang, the PC sends two or three Kerberos packets that are unanswered. My guess is that the shutdown process hangs because the server stopped responding to that machine.

The PCs are running XP Pro SP3.

Any thoughts?

You don't mention the server o/s - or any other setup options or how/when this started. also as its a domain - you might be better off in the server forums.

Thanks for the tips. I'll post this in the server forum. By the way, the server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition.

I'm probably not the best one to even be asking this question since I'm not a sys admin and I'm not familiar with enough of the details. I just thought I'd wade into these waters to try to help out.

Thanks again!

The PCs hang indefinitely. Our systems people have looked in the event logs and don't see anything that jumps out at them as being the problem. I'll get some more details on Monday if you want to know what specifically was in the event logs.

I'll look at those links. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

It might be a case of eliminating possible causes.

Start with Safe Mode, and check for a proper Shutdown. Then try "Safe Mode with Networking".

Try Normal Mode but with different logged on users.

Check for any Bios Updates, and try setting the Bios to Safe Defaults.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
