I am trying to install Windows 98 on a 486 pc. After formatting the hard disk and beginning the install it does the scandisk. This is where it pops up the message Error: PCI Read Configuration Error. This error can not be fixed by scandisk. It then cancels the setup.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

What flavor is your 486? Does the BIOS support PCI or just EIDE? Whatever the case may be, if you manage to install W98, anybody who uses the system will be miserable just waiting for the mouse cursor to move or for the desktop to refresh after closing a window.

I have a box full of old boards and chips under my desk, waiting for an opportunity to become thin-net clients. The opportunity has yet to present itself.

Consider what you are trying to do: you want to mount a Mopar blower on a lawn mower. Cool idea but that little two-stroke engine won't be able to handle the input.

My suggestion would be to settle for less when dealing with old hardware. Install Win3x or even Win95. They may not offer all of the "enhancements" of Win98 but, at least, they should work.

For my education, what version of 98 are you trying to install? What it seems to be telling you is that you don't have PCI. And it may be having a problem with hardware identification. And if there is a version out there that doesn't ident PCI right I'd like to know to avoid the same problems.

For starters it is Windows 98 Second Edition. I am kind of new to this so am I to understand that their is that much difference between 95 and 98? I will give 95 a shot, I just figured that if I was going to go to the trouble of reinstall the OS that I might as well use the latest that I had.
Thanks again for your input
