MSI 865PE-S NEO2 intel 865 chipset mobo
win xp pro w sp1
p4 2.4 cpu (533)
Dev mgr shows no issues at all.
I have a pci combo usb2.0 and firewire card with the ali M5271 chipset on it.
I am just building this system so i have it on my bench at the moment.
Whenever i plug this pci card into any of the pci slots my system starts up. I believe windows installs the files necessary for this card to work.
However, i cant use this card if it keeps booting up all the time, its an endless cycle. The only way to stop it is to turn it off at the back of the power supply.
I do have the newest and supposedly best drivers for this card but i hesistate to install them when i have the prob mentioned above.
Any suggestions? I am guessing that its in the bios somewhere but i cant seem to find where that may be?
Thanks

Okay, just to clarify a bit more for myself.

1. Install PCI Card
2. Boot Up System
3. Log on, looks like it installs
4. System reboots.
5. Rinse and repeat cycle.

If I'm wrong correct me, but if that is what's happening here's what we'll need you to do. Go to the event viewer and give us the error message that is being displayed there. To stop the continuous reboot cycle follow the below directions...

1. Go to my Computer and right click.
2. Choose properties.
3. Go to the advanced option
4. Click settings on "Startup and Recovery"
5. Disable automatic restart on system failure.

What this will do is allow to actually see the BSoD. On there and in the event viewer it will display a
0x0 style message that will help us to troubleshoot exactly what type of failure is happening. It sounds as if this is a driver issue but...meh, without being hands on I like the information before I make suggestions :)

Can you boot into save mode ? Don't rule out bad PCI card I had 2 bad out of 4 in the last 3 months. One the USB 2 says all usb devs. has errors the outher would lockup the system after the drivers was installed and lockup on boot after.

To Aquias:
Yes, correct. Actually the system booted up as soon as i plugged this new pci card into the pci slot. Windows boots up fine and it stays up and running fine, with no prob shown in dev mgr, so all is fine.
That is, until i decide to turn the computer off, then i get this endless cycle, when i turn computer off, it reboots instead and goes into windows. Each time i turn it off it reboots back into windows.
I will try the suggestion you made. My brain is still on vacation, should have tried that before posting.
On the other hand, system boots up fine and stays up. Problem only occurs when i turn the system off, it reboots back on. Also, as already mentioned, if you take the card out and put it in any pci slot, the system will boot on its own.
When the card is out, the system doesnt boot up on its own, all is normal.
I will check this out later and report back, have to go do other work for a few hours right now.

To allteltec
I will try safe mode after i try the first suggestion.

Thank you for your interest.
I was wondering for next time, should i have maybe put this into hardware? I put it here thinking its a software prob.

Guys, i decided to simply install a pci firewire card instead. The mobo comes with 6 - usb2 connectors so i really didnt need the extra usb, it was the firewire hookup i was after.
So i am gonna leave it at that for now.
Maybe next install that card wont cause a prob.
Thanks for the suggestions. Hope i dont inconvenience anyone.

That's the same chip set that I had the 2 bad boards in. Combo PCI 3-Port Firewire 5-port USB 2.0.

That really tells me something, guess its best to not use that card with that chipset.
Now i made things worse. I tried stuffing this huge mobo in a mid size case and when putting dvd burner in i knocked a really tiny something off that had been soldered on. Its real small, rectangle. It had connected 2 spots on the mobo and the mobo now wont boot.
So i guess i will try and solder it back on.
Thanks for the help guys.
