My motherboard, an old MSI MS-6167 support PC100 RAM. I was under the impression that I could use PC133 RAM, but it would only work at the lower speed. I've bought a couple of DIMMS of PC133 (256MB each).
It's detected by the BIOS in the power up and appears to work until Windows 2000 Server starts. Then I get lots of gps and then it just resets.
Swapping the memory for PC100 makes everything work again.
Am I missing something obvious or do I just need to sell the PC133 RAM and buy PC100?
The motherboard is supposed to support 256MB per slot.
Thanks
Andrew

Howdy:

The bulk of the newer PC-133 chips can't be used in a pc-100 system.. Your best bet is to get exactly what your system calls for !!

Andrew,
Back when PC-133 first came out on the market, it was usually safe to assume that you could buy PC133 for a PC100 system. The memory modules at the time were less dense than they are today. But like Murray said, many newer ones aren't compatible with older motherboards because they are too dense.

Double-sided DIMMs stand the best chance.

It is dangerous to just buy any RAM that says it is PC133 thinking it will work on a PC100 motherboard. I recommend buying RAM from places that guarantee what you will buy will work in the motherboard you have.

has a memory selector for upgrading your memory. They probably know what will work with your motherboard. Crucial says your motherboard is picky when it comes to compatabiliy with PC133.

Looks like you're right (all of you!).
I bought 3 DIMMS from different people on ebay. The only one that worked was from Kingston. Of the other two, one corrupted during startup, the other broke my profile in Win 2K.
Guess I'll have to be more careful in future.

Thanks all for your help.
