I recently bought a PC. Its spec is 773 mhz processor, 512mb Ram, 80gb harddrive, 760GXK8MC Motherboard. I can't get it to power on. When I plug in the mouse it lights up immediately but the machine wont power on. Any suggestions? Could it be power pack?

First try disconnecting all unnecessary peripherals from the motherboard and PSU. All you basically need connected is PSU to motherboard, video card plugged into motherboard, keyboard, and mouse. Now see if you get any beeps or video display. Also try it without video, keyboard or mouse.

If not, check the connections from motherboard to front panel. One pair of these wires will go to the momentary ON/OFF switch on the front. Check the switch works ok. Or, you can pull these two wires off the motherboard and just momentarily short the two pins with a small screwdriver blade.

It sounds like you maybe don't know the history of this machine, so if it still won't play, you've got a few other things to check or change. Check the CPU and heatsink fan assembly is fitted correctly. If you separate the heatsink from the CPU, then before replacing you must clean both surfaces thoroughly and use a smear of new heatsink compound. Check heatsink fan revolves easily, and that the heatsink is fitted the correct way round - some of them are "stepped" to fit the CPU and Zif socket.

Try swapping out PSU, CPU, RAM and video card. Failing that, it's starting to look like a motherboard problem. Might be worth checking the motherboard is mounted correctly, and doesn't have a metal standoff pillar where there's no corresponding mobo mounting hole. Also check that a screw hasn't inadvertantly rolled underneath the board and is shorting a pcb track to deck.

I would check the motherboard's compatibility with the "773 mhz processor". This board is a socket 754 and supports Athlon and Sempron processors. Which CPU are you using?
