Hope this is the right forum for this type of question - if not, feel free to move it to the right area...

As of this morning I've noticed that whenever I boot my pc, as well as starting all the programs in the Start menu, the 'Dial-up Connection' box pops-up and tries to start dialling my ISP! This has never happened before, and I don't want it to - I only want dialling to occur when I request a connection to the internet.

In the IE Internet Properties Connection tab I have set to dial whenever a network connection is not present (the middle option). The default page is set to about:blank. I am using XP pro SP2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Alan

Sounds like you have something that wants to get on the internet before you're ready.

1. Could be an auto updater.
2. Could be a virus.
3. Could be an adult content dialer.
4. A shortcut in your Startup menu group that launches the dialer.

Do you see anything in your add/remove programs you don't know what it is, or know shouldn't be?

Are you the only one that uses this system, and installs programs on it?

Run a good spyware/antivirus/adware remover and see what it comes up with.

I've been blessed with the following.
(free personal antivirus software)
(search for AdAware and Trojan Guard Gold)

Also, try housecall.trendmicro.com for a free online virus scan.

Wonderful stuff! I've downloaded all 3 - hopefully they will come-up with something.

Many thanks,
Alan

If you browser is Internet Explorer this will help.

In IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections/ "Never Dial A Connection".

Specifies that Internet Explorer not automatically dial a connection for you when you need to connect to the Internet. You must first manually start your dial-up connection and then connect to the Internet.

From Kelly Theriot:

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

You can delete any TCP/IP addresses that you see under this key. Note that AutoDial can use IP addresses, DNS fully qualified domain names (FQDN), and NetBIOS names.
