Hi folks

Can any kind soul out there advise on how to get into this IT business. I have qualifications at City and Guilds and A+ level but have no practical experience, every job I see advertised for IT support etc states that experience is necessary.. Everyone has to start somewhere, but how and where?? Has anybody out there been in the same boat and can help? I would really appreciate it..

See if you can find a rebuild organization that is refurbing systems for charities. They always need help , you will be working with non-critical systems , and there will be experienced oversight. No pay but great experience and generally is done nights and weekends. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Try going for "Help Desk" jobs first. Less experience required than full PC support. It's a crap job, but it's a start.

I started on a Help Desk, many eons ago - now I do pretty much what I like when I like (and get paid for it!).

The Help Desk is a good place to start in a company - you get to talk to people at all levels - not just of seniority, but of computing experience. You can build up a solid knowledge base and, if you're any good (or just enjoying yourself), someone will notice, and you'll be promoted to 2nd-line support in no time.

From there it's a relatively small step to 3rd-line and systems admin.

Good Luck!
