PC resets at startup...?

HI,
I was given a PC that would not boot - got hung up at verifying DMI pool data. Tried to replace MBR - no luck so formatted HDD and re-installed win98 SE.
msg "you already have operating system installed - boot from HDD!!!?"
Installed Win98 anyway - as soon as it was finished the system shutdown and started to boot up again!
Now everytime the desktop loads it shuts down and re-starts...
any help is appreciated - thanks
