Hello. I have a computer that constantly locks up and I can't figure out why it's doing that. It seems like it locks up every other day or so. I have checked my resources and have found no conflicts. I have no idea how to fix this problem. Any help you may provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Have you checked the temperature of your cpu? It might have overheated.

can you do ctrl-alt-delete and get a task lisk?
Actually, once every other day or so isn't as bad as most.
Are you shutting it down at night? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

what are the essential processes that should be running?

Mine shows a full list as soona s I start up and locks very often.

Can I delete some of the processes?

rmdk, if you know how to shut the processes off you can. Normally you go to the application's options and normally it would have a check box asking if application should be run on startup.
Or you can go under Start -> Programs -> StartUp
and delete any program you don't want windows to start up with. Sometimes if the program still runs at startup and it is not in the StartUp folder, then you go to my first suggestion.
You can tell if you have too many programs running by looking at your toolbar. You can just right click on the program you wanna shut down and press alt-f4. Sometimes windows gets confused and pops up the Shutdown-Restart-Standby menu.

if you just did a clean installation of windows, the machine is still locking up, then it must be a hardware problem.

Hello. Thank you everyone so much for responding so quickly. When the computer locks up you cannot end any task. The only way to get out of the lock up is to manually shut down the computer. The server is always up and running, it is our Proxy server (Proxy is the only thing on this machine). I will check the CPU fan to make sure it is still working. Also, I was thinking it could be the memory. Thank you again for your help. Also, I'm open to any more ideas or suggestions you may have.

I was gonna suggest the memory part too cuz that's what I think mine is doing too. I have checked everything and the only thing that would come to mind is the memory. It was a cheap $80 256MB ram so I think that is my problem. Crashes on anything. IE, Gamespy, other applications and ESPECiALLY when I try to do that DVD2MPG or anything that makes VCDS.
But I am wondering though If I just add a GOOD memory to it, would it prevent it from crashing or because a bad one is on it would still keep crashing. Need info.
