I am running windows 98 and For some reason I can disable the sound and then reboot and connect to the internet fine with my modem but if I don't disable my sound my computer locks no mouse anything when it tries to do something with sound. Same way if I don't dial in for internet sound works fine just acts like they are conflicting in some way I have check the properties and things in the system and everything looks fine just started doing this i even tried all new modem and sound card. If any one can help me with this that would be great thanks a bunch.

try putting the volume on the modem to off and see whats happens

go to the control panel
select modems
propeties
select off on sound

Sounds like an IRQ conflict. Is the modem a PCI or ISA? Same for the sound card. What are the resources listed for each in the Device Manager?
Al
atc-computing@home.com

The Sound card is a ISA card and the Modem is a new 3Com PCI modem. I have tried different modems different sounds cards. still nothing i can dial in fine while playing sound but as soon as i get connected to my ISP it locks up my whole machine mouse and everything. example I play mp3's i play a song and while that is playing i opened my dial up connection hit connect as soon as it says sends data to and from my ISP it locks up but if no sound is playing while i am connected it works fine? I have checked irq's and everything shows no conflicts I also tried turning off sound for modem nothing?

Take out the sound card completely, reboot system, make sure everything works as it should. turn off machine reinsert sound card, reboot and reinstall drivers.

If it was a resource conflict the system would lock as soon as you opened the port. If you can dial fine, and it locks up upon authentication, then it may be in the DUN.
Just for kicks, try using the phone dialer while playing audio and see if that locks it up. This will use the modem without the DUN. If that works then I would try uninstalling DUN (write down any important settings) and then reinstall it.
Hope this helps.
Al
atc-computing@home.com
