Is it a common problem in the Graphics industry converting PC files to Mac. My company seems to have many problems. They dont want to deal with pc graphic files. Please help.

Hi,

pagemaker-files are good for Macs and PC's, the only thing you need is a file converter.

A mac file consists of two forks, a PC file has only one fork. Therefore you need to convert the PC file into a Mac-readable file with two forks.

You can do this when saving on a PC platform but you must have a utility to mount a Mac disk and save the file directly to the Mac-disk. You cannot save the mac file onto your hard drive and then copy to a mac formatted disk;

Or you can save your work on a PC disk , go to your company and mount the disk with a dos-mounter or another utility., then they can open your document on the Mac. You have top open the programm first and then open the PC file not by double clicking but with the Open-command. This will open a copy of the original. But there are also a lot of conversion programms for the mac who will convert your PC-document to mac and then you can open it easily.

I also am working on a project, for an exposition,
seven zones with each 5 to 9 'posters' 520x800mm
and 3 to 5 'posters' 520x400mm
I work on PC and Adobe PageMaker6,5 ,
questions,
how do I present my documents to the 'print-company'
they also have Mac (and don't like this from the beginning)
how to save, which option to take, what to avoid,

Note, I do not have postscript printer so Adobe PM refuses to save in Postscript, PDF as a conclusion also is impossible.

Another question,
when 'placing' an image from a file, do I or not need a copy --copies are marked with D wich is the hard drive
all images are in same file of their zone with PM65 doc (zoneA, zoneB, ...)
If you could help me with your experience,
thanks

Hi,

The problem with the conversion between the two platforms are always the fonts you use in your publication.
So if you wan't an output via a mac controlled printer the best thing to do is print your pc file to disk, page by page as an eps. Include all fonts in your eps(true type and type 1 option. If your publication has cmyk images a good printer ppd is Color general, but you can use anycolor prnter ppd that comes with your pagemaker. Don't forget to set the lpi in your color tab. This informationyou can get from the printer where your publication will be printed.

These eps files can be read by any layout program (indesign, quark,...) If you wan't to have check if your eps-files are OK, try to open one in photoshop or even better in Illustrator 9. If you get the message "parser having problems to open this file", something is wrong.

Photoshop will ot open the file than, ilustrator often do opens this file and then you can see what the problem is in the opened illustrator file. Several problems can occur like fots that are not downloaded, pictures that are not well converterted and so on... Too much possibilities to discuss her. If you encounter a problem I'll gladly help you

The problem with the pictures I don't understand very well.
Pagemaker has two ways of managig pictures you place inyour publication. Include them in your publication or don't. I wouldn't advise including pictures in a publication because it slows up pagemaker.

For PM, images can be in any folder.
Opposed to Grillhouse I would recommmend
to place images, because otherwise the image
source and the included image occupy 200% hard disk space.
It is better to copy all images to the same folder, where
the PM is located.
This can be done automatically by Export for Service Provider.
Unfortunately this method fails sometimes.--G.Hoffmann

Hi

When you made your eps-files with the option include images, you don't need the placed pictures anymore.

The eps than has the font information and the picture information included in the eps. This way your printershop has all the necessary information included in one file/page.

Grillhouse: "place" refers only to PM files.
You are right: EPS pages can include everything,
but you don´t need an option "include" for
Save as EPS for the images.
EPS is always complete, with one exception:
fonts must be embedded explicitely.
