PC Boot Problems

Hi all,

I have a problem with a PC booting. It was originally displaying lots of random letters whilst performing the POST and in the BIOS. We have replaced the graphics card which has sorted this but now, on the boot menu, it will not allow us to select Safe Mode, Start Normally etc. The options can be highlighted but the computer hangs when pressing Enter.

Any thoughts?

Try the OS forums. Without further info I would say this is not a hardware issue. (unless the motherboard has died.)

However - I would say its a driver issue. Windows is expecting the old video card. In safe mode, un-unstall the video drivers. Windows should then boot normally, find new hardware and demand the driver disk - or just install them automatically.

At boot menu it is still at VGA under control of whatever the CMOS has as default settings. Can you get into the BIOS? It sounds like the CMOS may have lost the keyboard activation. But this is guessing for now.

Thanks for the responses..

We couldnt get into safe mode to install the graphics card drivers so unable to try this out.

In the end we decided to start fresh so took the 160Gb HDD out of my friends PC and put it in my PC with my HDD responsible for loading Windows. We then accessed his drive and backed up all the files he wanted.

We put the 160GB file back in his PC and lo! it just started working and he has had no problems with it since!!

PCs eh? who can odds `em

I'd check/replace the IDE cable just to be safe.
