I have never tried it, but probably not. Is there any reason you cannot copy the source layer/document to the target on a new layer? You can definitely patch/heal/clone from multiple layers.

I suppose you could put both pics side by side on one canvas, do the cloning then crop out the unwanted pic you cloned from
