password question

I need that before I let anyone view a page( a number of pages actually), he should be asked for a username and password.If the user types a URL he is first promptem for a username/password , rather than a form in the page that does that.

Can some one tell me how to do this?
I am using redhat linux 7.3, Apache server and postgresql

I am talking of client side authentication actually, not the yahoo mail type of login
I am not sure, it could be an apache feature
