I put a password on Access it self because of some of the new internet hacker problems. I had read from one of the security email newsletters it was a good idea. I used my standard password.

Now after shutting the system down and restarting, I can not open any of my Access MDBs. I have tried the password I gave it with all versions of Caps, non-caps. How can I get out this mess?

Thanks

I am definitely not a security expert, but can you replace your sysem.mdw file??

Go into Workgroup Administrator (probably at C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\WRKGADM.EXE) and see what workgroup you belong to. If it is the system.mdw file on your harddrive, see what happens if you try to open the files from someone else's machine. If you can open it from someone else's machine, then you should be able to open on yours if you copy their system.mdw file.
Kathryn

Hi, I looked at that, and even renamed the file, It did not do anything to access. I still get asked for a password as Administrator (which is how I run). But the password I remember (and always use, bad habit), does not work. I need to get Access to forget I put a password on it.

Thanks for the help.

Don't replace your system32, it won't work. In fact, this will make your matters worse. If you haven't replaced it, try signing in as Admin with no password. If you've already done that, then you've destroyed the only copy of what permissions are allowed to whom. If you've replaced the system32, here's what I would suggest, there's hope yet. Make sure that your system is set to system32 in the windows directory. This is the generic permissions file provided by Microsoft. Once you've done that, create a new database then start importing the information from the old database. This will create the information in the new database without the old permissions you've set to it. Then I would suggest you read up on security measures a bit more and practice with a dummy database. The key is setting yourself as admin. Put simply, you have to create you account while signed in as the Admin account; set your name, acct., and password; then set your permissions. This process is best done while a database is being created.

Hi, Thanks for your response, I did not replace the system32 thing. So everything is still there. But I can not even open a new Access database. I always get asked for a password (with a default Administrator name). None of my usual passwords work. I was sure when I did the password thing a couple a days I used my standard, but all combinations of caps etc fail. So I am unable to get to access at all except to open the program.

Please I still need help. Could I uninstall Acess and reinstall it?? Would that wipe on the password?

Thanks again for responding.

I am sure if you sign on as Admin and your password then you will get it open like the person said above this last message. Otherwise, I would delete the file associated with the db security system.mdw. I have done it before but this wipes out all the old passwords you saved and user permissions. You will have to start fresh! Otherwise if you remember what the Admin password is, given that you didn't change the Admin user name, and if you did change that Admin name then you will just have to keep trying. Goodluck

Email a copy of your mdw file to me. I have software that will break all the passwords. I will email you back with the results.

RDH
Ricky Hicks
rdhicks@mindspring.com

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the default user that is first created upon setting security for Access is "Admin". If your trying to get in using "Administrator", that may be why the password doesn't work, because the username may not exist. Try that and see if your password works.

Hiya,

What process did you go thru to protect the all of Access from internet hackers?

I'd see if you could take a clean system.mdw file from somebody elses machine without workgroup security. Install is in a directory other than the windows/system directory (ie dont overwrite) and open a new database using command line switches
like
"C:\Program Files\MSOffice\Access.exe" "C:\Windows\Desktop\Temp.mdb" \wrkgrp C:\Windows\Desktop\NewSystem.mdw

HTH,
Drew
