We have a 5509 switch. It was time to change passwords and last night, an employee of mine said he was in via telnet from home performing the task of changing the password.

Said he simply did a "set password 12345" (as an example). Now, whenever we telnet in and get prompted, when we put the new password in, it drops the connection. He said he was using his wireless network from home and remembers at the time he was lagging some, so he thinks he may have missed a character when putting in the new password.

I just hooked up my laptop directly to the switch, however, I'm prompted for a password and it's not taking as well. We did not write a copy of the config to a TFTP server prior to changing unfortunately. Is there a way to recover the previous password ? Without blowing away the config ?

PLEASE HELP....

Piece o'cake. The 5000's & 6000's don't have a password during the first 15 or so seconds after booting. So just hook up a console cable, reboot & wait for a prompt. Then just hit <enter>, enable, <enter> and you're in!

OK, so I just came in and rebooted my 5509 switch, but couldn't accomplish the task within 30 seconds. I did somehow get into enable mode. I just did a "set enablepass" and put in the old password which took, then created a new one. Problem is, when I do a "set password", it's not taking the old password meaning my employee changed it. There has to be some way to remove that password now that I'm in enable mode ?

Please help ASAP ?

From what you are saying, you're not using secret. Just log in in enable, show run and look up the password.
