Password Cache

Does 2000 have a password cache similar to Win95? Here is the scenario. I have a user that needs to map to a share via IP, her password expired so she reset it. Now whenever she tries to connect to it either using the run command or trying to map a drive she gets the message that the account is locked. If the account is reset we can connect using her account on any machine. Now when we go back to her machine, we immediately get a message that the account is locked. The only thing I can come up with is that she must have checked the box enabling Windows to remember the password. I have been unable to locate where I can disable this.

Win2k caches passwords in C:\windows\pwls. Try deleting the appropriate username.pwl file and see if it works.

There is no C:\Windows\PWL...and I searched the entire hdd for user's pwl file.

Hmm, that's where they are on my PC...Maybe someone else can back me up on this?

I take it this PC is part of a domain, right? What clients is it running?

Did you do a search for *.pwl and came up empty? You should at least have a file called "default.pwl", and it should be in the same directory as all the other ones.

Windows 9X uses .pwl files - NT uses NTLM for Authentication. When you log in, you're assigned a token that contains your authentication information. When you try to access a network resource, the machine on the other side checks that token to see if you have permission to access it. It sounds as though at least one of these machines is not part of a domain - perhaps her password was changed on one and not on the other. Make sure her passwords are the same on both machines. both machines are members of the domain and the user is authenticating to the domain. Password has been reset on the resource several times, as soon as she tries to connect to the resource she gets the message that the account is locked. If I log on to my box with her username and password I can hit the resource box without any problems using her login information, so can other users in the same office. I have also recreated her local profile to no avail...this thing has given me migraines!!!

Do a net use from a command prompt and see what she's connected to. net use /delete any connections, log off and back on, and recreate them as necessary. Marc Creviere

Has anyone checked if there is a service/process auto logging in with the old password such that the account becomes locked out again?

I've thought of the service/process autologin but I don't know which one to look for.

If it is a 2k box check the services and check the logonas column. Also, check scheduled tasks on the machine for automated tasks.

LogonAs is set to Local System, no tasks are scheduled.

try to Lock her account ,, and then after applying for that , try to unlock it again...

I'm confused as to which account is being locked.. her domain account? or is there a local account on the machine she's trying to access that's locking out?
And deleting the local profile (Documents and Settings/user) off of that computer would have the same effect as deleting mapped shares. If she's logged into a domain, and the host she's trying to reach is part of that domain, then the server is authenticating her and that token she be taken on every host in the domain.

If the host machine is part of the domain, and is using her domain account to authenticate, then there is no local password to reset on the resource. That's done by the server by any workstation the user is logged into. It still seems some information is missing here.

ok, i have forgotten one of my passwords, i suppose i have too many..anyway, I have been told that there is a cache on my computer of passwords..where is it? running windows 98, MS passport password. help me please!

Look for a pwl file, it would probably be something like username.pwl. Delete that file, it will be recreated when you log back on to your pc.
