PartitionMagic did no magic on the Compaq laptop !! Pliz help .. 2

I just bought a Compaq laptop (Model R3210CA , CPU AMD Apthlon 2.8 Ghz, 40 Gigs HD ) with WinXP Home Sp1 preinstalled. I upgraded to SP2 from the Internet then use PowerQuest Partition Magic v8.0 to resize drive C: from 40Gigs to 15 Gigs , intending to add 2 more partitions to the HD. After the first reboot to execute the task, PartitionMagic showed : " Error 983 _ Too many error found_ Process Halted " then it rebooted and I was back at square one !!

The same thing happened after I uninstalled v8.0 and install Norton PartitionMagic v8.05 . I also visited Symantec website and it indicated no issues with WinXP + SP2 and its PartitionMagic v8.05
I tried several more times with the same error message . Please advise how to deal with this problem . Thanks,

Two things to try:

. Use MSCONFIG to uncheck the startup Application and Service entries for your antivirus program. Reboot and try again.

. Start, Run, CMD
chkdsk c: /F

You will have to restart for the chkdsk to run. When finished, reboot and try again.

Hey men you are the best. I have been dealing with the same issue for almost a long time. Until now i decided to repartition my HDD again i have the same problem so what i did is just follow your steps and it work like a charm. Right now my HDD is being partition so that i have enough space were to install linux on my pc.
